Our Favorite Personal Handguns For Women

A hand holding a gun

If you’re a woman who has ever shopped for a handgun, then you’ve had to deal with certain assumptions.

Everyone seems to think you want something small and cute, preferably in pink.

But in reality, the question of what handgun is best for you is much more complex.

While every woman (and every person) has their own style and needs, we do have a few recommendations about our personal favorite handguns for women.

A Word About Caliber

Traditionally, women are usually encouraged to purchase small handguns in a caliber no greater than .32. Unfortunately, these smaller caliber handguns do not pack as much power to stop an attacker.

If you’re sincerely concerned about protection, you might be wise to purchase a larger handgun, with a higher caliber bullet, which can disable your attacker without simply making him or her angrier.

However, even a .22-caliber shotgun offers more protection than no gun at all.

In fact, the question of what kind of handgun to get runs much deeper than caliber. It really has to do with your physical traits and individual needs.

Smith & Wesson Shield

The MP380 Shield EZ has been the traditional choice for many, because it’s user-friendly and convenient. However, some women have complained that this brand just isn’t powerful enough.

In response, Smith & Wesson introduced the M&P9 Shield EZ. Like the MP 380, this handgun’s mild recoil and small frame make it a great choice for a pistol. It will fit easily in your purse or tucked neatly in your belly band for a concealed carry.

The chamber is powerful yet manageable. The quality of components are obvious, because they are so easy and smooth to handle.

Glock 19

There’s a reason why Glocks have become a household name. The Glock 19, in particular, stands out as an ideal handgun for concealed carry.

It is smaller than its popular counterpart, the Glock 17, while boasting the same simple yet efficient design.

This is the gun to choose if you’re not interested in all the bells and whistles; you simply want a firearm that works.

One point to keep in mind: the Glock 19 is a double-stacked pistol, which means that it’s a bit larger to grip than the other handguns mentioned here. If you want something that’s a bit slimmer to hold, you might want to choose a single-stacked pistol instead.

Sig Sauer P365

The Sig Sauer P365 has been consistently ranked one of the best handguns for women. It’s the handgun of choice for first-time shooters as well as those with many years of experience.

Its popularity is due in part to its unique 10+1 round capacity, unusual in a 9mm-caliber pistol. Because of this design, it’s light and easy to handle. You won’t find another double-stacked pistol which is so compact.

A variety of models are available, so you can choose what works best for you. It can fit comfortably in your hands, no matter how large or small they are.

As with anything, you’ll want to try out a variety of handguns before deciding what works best for you. But any of the firearms on this list are a great starting point.
