Just Getting Started? Here's What You Need to Know About Gun Laws and Concealed Carry
So, you’ve decided to take control of your personal safety. Whether you're brand new to firearms or finally ready to make the leap into concealed carry — welcome. I’m so proud of you.
I still remember how overwhelming it felt when I first started. Googling laws late at night, trying to figure out which bag could safely hold my firearm (hence… Kinsey Rhea was born!), and feeling that all my questions were "silly." Spoiler: they weren’t silly — asking questions = wisdom.
If you're just getting started, let me walk you through a few things you need to know about gun laws and carrying confidently. Because informed women are empowered women.
1. Know Your State’s Laws (and the Neighboring Ones Too!)
Every state has different laws when it comes to carrying a firearm—where you can carry, how you can carry, and whether you need a permit.
Some states are "constitutional carry," meaning no permit is required, while others have strict requirements like training, fingerprinting, and background checks. And just because you have a license in your home state doesn’t always mean it’s valid in the next one.
🗺 KR Tip: Use apps like Concealed Carry by USCCA or Legal Heat to check reciprocity maps and local laws before traveling.
2. Concealed vs. Open Carry – What’s the Difference?
Let’s break it down:
Concealed carry means your firearm is hidden from plain sight (think: inside a bag, under clothing, in a holster).
Open carry means your firearm is visible.
Some states allow both, others only allow one. I personally choose concealed carry because it allows me to stay discreet and maintain the element of surprise if I were ever in a dangerous situation.
3. Do You Need a License?
This depends on your state. I recommend getting one even in states that don’t require a license. Why?
✅ It shows law enforcement you’re trained
✅ It makes travel easier across state lines
✅ Some states allow license holders to bypass waiting periods
Plus, the training itself is empowering—it gives you confidence in your decision to carry.
4. Understand Where You Can’t Carry
Even if you’re licensed, there are places you’re legally not allowed to carry:
Federal buildings (like post offices)
Schools and school zones (without special authorization)
Private businesses with “no guns” signage (varies by state)
Pay attention to signs and be prepared to store your firearm safely if you're headed into one of these spaces.
5. Carry Confidently AND Safely
This is where gear matters. The right holster or concealed carry bag (🙋♀️hi, friend) can make all the difference in comfort, access, and safety. Your firearm should be:
Secured in a dedicated compartment
In a proper holster that protects the trigger
Positioned so you can access it quickly if needed
At Kinsey Rhea, we design with your real life in mind—bags that look good, lock up, and let you carry with confidence.
6. Practice, Practice, Practice
Taking a concealed carry class is just the beginning. Visit the range regularly, practice drawing from your bag or holster, and stay sharp. You don’t rise to the occasion—you fall to the level of your training.
You've Got This!
Starting your concealed carry journey is a big decision, and I’m cheering you on every step of the way. The more you learn, the more comfortable and capable you’ll feel. You’re not just carrying a firearm. You’re carrying confidence – and it looks good on you!
